Virginia Tech Torgersen Hall

Unquestionably the most recognized landmark on the Virginia Tech campus, Torgersen Hall, with its adjoining arched pedestrian bridge spanning Alumni Mall, is a 150,000sf engineering classroom, lecture and research lab building. The building also includes the Board of Visitors boardroom. Named for former University President and Engineering Professor, Paul Torgersen, the building reflects the University’s roots as a preeminent engineering university. Public spaces function as technology and media-enabled study areas that serve as pre-function areas for a 300-seat auditorium. A special feature of the project called for a long pedestrian bridge across the main boulevard, connecting Torgersen Hall to the campus’ main Newman Library. The bridge is a 140′ span of traditional “Hokie Stone” that is approximately two stories above the Alumni Mall. The bridge houses the “electronic reading room,” a room that measures nearly 50′ wide and 21′ high at the apex of the arched ceiling.
